The Challenge
This property offered size and potential but a steep slope dominated the backyard, making the space unusable and unsafe. The homeowners wanted to install an inground pool, create a comfortable space for entertaining, and make the entire backyard feel like a destination.
But first, they needed a solution that could stabilize the slope, shape the space, and serve as the foundation for everything that came next.
The Solution
We started by constructing a massive retaining wall using natural stone outcropping, engineered to hold back the hillside and create a flat, secure area for the pool and patio. From there, we built layered steps using natural stone and large-format slabs to offer access from multiple elevations.
The pool was paired with a full-width lounging deck, modern paver surfaces, and clean vertical retaining walls that mirror the home’s crisp architecture. A custom utility enclosure was added to house pool equipment discreetly, while planting beds and decorative stone finished off the space with softness and color. Every element was designed to withstand Wisconsin’s climate while offering a seamless transition from the house to the water.
The Result
The transformation is dramatic. What was once an unworkable slope is now a showpiece outdoor living space—complete with an inground pool, functional terraces, and sleek, structured transitions.
The landscape feels calm and cohesive, designed for both everyday living and weekend entertaining. With bold natural stone elements anchoring the space, the backyard now feels as strong and grounded as it does welcoming.
