Building the Unbuildable

The Challenge
When this brand-new home was built into a steep hillside, it left the homeowners with a backyard that was almost unusable.
The land dropped off sharply toward the boathouse, offering little flat ground and making access both difficult and dangerous. Traditional landscaping wasn’t an option — this site called for serious problem-solving.
The Solution
Drawing on our experience with challenging terrain, we transformed the slope into a series of layered outdoor spaces. Using natural outcropping stone, we created strong, visually stunning retaining walls that both stabilized the hill and added structure.
Broad, inviting stone steps and pathways now wind comfortably down the hillside, feeling as though they belong to the land itself. At the water’s edge, we crafted a durable patio beside the boathouse — a perfect perch for taking in the view without scaling a cliff.
The Result
Today, the hillside feels grounded, beautiful, and completely functional.
What once was an untouchable slope is now a flowing, peaceful space where the homeowners can relax, entertain, and connect with nature. It’s the kind of transformation that reminds you how powerful thoughtful landscaping can be — especially when it’s designed to work with the land, not against it.
